The temple Apollo in Delphi is found in central Greece, built around a sacred spring located 38 28’ 53.28 N and 22 29’ 18.65 E., over half a km high, between the cities Theva and Amfissa not far from Athens. It is located on the slopes of the mountain Parnassus.

The temple of Apollo was built in archaic years (around the 6th century BC), but it was ruined (burnt in 548 and then again in the 4th century) and rebuilt in late classical years and early hellenistic (5th-4th century BC). The result of this is that although the plot of the building is archaic, because it kept being rebuilt on the archaic foundations, the morphological features and details are late classical.

Delphi was considered to be the omphalos – In Greek mythology it is the center if the world. The myth tells how Zeus let glide two eagles and after they went around the earth the both landed in Delphi. They called it the Omphalos (belly button) of earth.

Delphi is perhaps best-known for the oracle at the sanctuary that became dedicated to Apollo during the classical period. With origins in prehistoric times and the worship of Gaia, in the last quarter of the 8th century BC there is a steady increase of artefacts found at the settlement site in Delphi. Pottery and bronze work as well as tripod dedications continue in a steady stream, in comparison to Olympia. Neither the range of objects nor the presence of prestigious dedications proves that Delphi was a focus of attention for worshipers of a wide range, but the strong representation of high value goods are found in no other mainland sanctuary, certainly encourages that view.

An archaeological site was excavated and partially restored by the French school of archaeology in the early 20th century, and it is one of the most vital and spectacular sites in Greece, also because of the magnificent landscape.

The archaeological site is in the Unesco World Heritage List. In the museum there are some magnificent statues, preferably the chariot driver (Eniohos) and the Sphinx.

The treasures (thesauroi) dedicated by the city to Apollo. The sanctuary also comprises a theatre, a stadium (where took place athletic games in honour of Apollo, called Pythia), and a secondary sanctuary, all preserved in ruins but remarkably well.

Delphi also became the banking center of the world. Most every “state” kept its treasure in Delphi. It also has a gorgeous ancient theatre. There are in the museum, one of the world’s masterpieces of sculpture, a gift from a grateful state the Charioteer.

The lack of a strict religious dogma associated with the worship of Greek gods, also encouraged scholars to congregate at Delphi, and it became a focal point for intellectual enquiry, as well as an occasional meeting place where rivals could negotiate. Delphi became a fantastic showcase of art treasures and Greek cities would send rich gifts to keep the Oracle as an alley. It finally came to an end in the 4th century AD when a newly Christian Rome proscribed its prophesying.

People came from all over Greece to have their questions about the future answered by Pythia, the priestess of Apollo. They questioned about personal or political issues (their fate in war, etc), and Pythia, after drinking sacred water from the Castallia fountain, gave ambiguously articulated answers, so that either way she was proven right at the end.

It became well-known for its “predictions” The Oracles gave their prophecies in a cave filled with gasses, naturally produced gas from volcanic activity, which gave them their “visions.”. The oracle room is built of a fissure. She spoke incoherently and it was up to the priest hood to interpret her vocalizations. It was a priesthood very well versed in the politics of the times. It was more a political reckon tank giving advice. A lot of times the “oracle” would give statements, her answers, usually cryptic, might determine the course of everything from when a farmer planted his seedlings, to when an empire declared war.

The predictions made by the Oracle might be translated and understood by two ways, one negative and one positive. For example, if a soldier questioned her whether he would stay alive or not and return to the country she answered:

You will die in the war not in your country

If you place the comma before “not”, then you will have: You will die in the war, not in your country and that means that the soldier would die in the war. If you place the comma after “not”, then you will have: You will die in the war not, [but] in your country and that means that he will die in his country.

Argments over the right interpretation of an oracle were common, but the oracle was always pleased to give another prophecy if more gold was provided. A excellent example is the well-known incident before theBattle of Salamis when the Pythia first predicted doom and later predicted that a ‘wooden wall’ (interpreted by the Athenian to mean their ships) would save them.

KING PYRRHUS of Epirus in north-western Greece was engaged in a long-term conflict with the Roman Empire. Desperately desiring a clue regarding its outcome, he went to consult the oracle of Delphi. But the answer he received might be understood in either of the following two ways: (1) “I say that thou son of Æacus canst conquer the Romans. Thou shalt go, thou shalt return, never shalt thou perish in war.” (2) “I say that the Romans can conquer thee, son of Æacus. Thou shalt go, thou shalt never return, thou shalt perish in war.” He chose to know the oracle in the former way and therefore waged war against Rome. Pyrrhus was utterly defeated. Such cases made ancient oracles notorious for being vague and enigmatic.

The oracle didn’t always make predictions. The oracle often just gave advice. For example…Hercules was the son of Zeus (but not the son of his wife, Hera). The goddess Hera, out of jealousy, was determined to make distress for Hercules, and made him lose his mind. In this confused state, he killed his wife and children.

When he awakened from his “temporary insanity,” Hercules was shocked and upset by what he’d done. He prayed to the god Apollo for guidance, and the god’s ORACLE told him he would have to serve Eurystheus, the king of Tiryns and Mycenae, for twelve years, in punishment for the murders.

As part of his sentence, Hercules had to perform twelve impossible tasks or labours. (They weren’t impossible for him, though.

Greek Mythology Hercules – The Mortal who became God

Hercules is the offspring of Zeus, the king of gods and a woman of earth. It is said that Hera, Zeus’ green-eyed wife tried to do way with him when he was only an infant. Hera sent a couple of serpents to kill him. Nevertheless, the serpents landed in the small but powerful hands of Hercules only to meet their fate.

When Hercules was born to Alcmene, she named him Herakles. But in Roman, Herakles is pronounced Hercules, which is the name we use for Hercules to this day. Hercules in Greek mythology is a fantastic figure of valor and muscle strength. Hercules bravery earned him a place among the gods. After he left the mortal world, he found a position on Mount Olympus, the gods’ dwelling place.

Zeus, the King of the gods was an unfaithful husband. He had a weakness for worldly pleasures. He fell in like with Alcmene, the wife of Amphitryon. In a small time, Alcmene conceived Hercules. This angered Hera and she tried to kill Hercules. Hercules survived his first fatal assault with a miracle.

When Hercules reached adulthood he became a well-known warrior. He also fell in like with a gorgeous woman called Megara. Megara became the mother of Hercules’ children and together they made a pleased family. But, things were to be different. Hera took a vow to irritate Hercules during his lifetime. She tricked Hercules into a wild rage. In his rage, the mortal god Hercules killed his family. This was exactly what Hera wanted!

When Hercules returned to his normal state of mind, he saw things were beyond remedy. He prayed to Apollo to get rid of his crime. Apollo was the sun god who could read into the future. We find in Greek Mythology that Hercules requested his advice. Apollo assigned him ten vital tasks (later it was turned to twelve) as the way of purifying his soul.

The Delphic oracle sent him to Tiryns where the king Eurystheus ruled. Hercules was expected to serve him as laborer for twelve years of his life. But, the hard service was not fruitless. Apollo promised him immortality. He was to become a god. But, the fantastic Hercules of greek mythology had one problem, Hera. She really kept her promise to make Hercules’ life as wretched as she could. Nevertheless, with the help of Hermes and Athena, Hercules pulled off his term of twelve years with excellence. In addition, he became the greatest mortal on the earth to become a god.

Hercules In Greek Mythology – What Made Him So Special?
The honorable penance of Hercules and his eventual success is what makes him so special. His success brought him immortality, which would have been unthinkable for ordinary mortals. Hercules’ first task was to peel off the skin of the horrifying Nemean Lion after capturing one. His next task was to kill The Lernean Hydra. The Lernean Hydra was a serpent with nine heads, which never gave peace to the lives of those around it. The third task for him was to bring a Hind (a sacred red deer) from Ceryneia to the king. The deer was the pet of Diana, the Moon goddess.

The fourth task for Hercules was to bring a live Erymanthian Boar. It was very perilous to men and animals living around the mountain Erymanthus. Then Hercules was questioned to clean up King Augeas’ stables in one day. Are you thinking what is so fantastic about it? King Augeas had an awesome amount of cattle of cows, bulls, goats, sheep and horses. Hercules proposed to King Augeas that he would clean the stable only if he rewarded Hercules with a tenth of his cattle.

After this success, Eurystheus was plotting to make something tougher for Hercules. He commanded the hero, Hercules, to force out an enormous flock of birds, which assembled at a lake near the town of Stymphalos. Goddess Athena helped him with a pair of bronze krotala, an item similiar to castanets. The Cretan Bull was an simple task for Hercules. Hercules wrestled the bull, and then delivered it back to King Eurystheus. The eighth task was to bring the Man-Eating Horses of Diomedes. It was followed by the battle against the Amazonian female army to get the belt of Hippolyte, the queen. The tenth labor was an awesome one. Hercules had to go around the world, to bring the cattle of the Monster Geryon. It had three heads and three sets of legs all attached at the waist.

The tough assignment was the eleventh one. Eurystheus questioned Hercules to get the Apples of the Hesperides. These were the golden apples gifted by Hera to Zeus. These apples were strictly guarded by a hundred-headed dragon, named Ladon, and also by Hesperides, daughters of Atlas. The other obstacle was that Hercules had no thought where these apples of Hesperides were located. Eventually, Hercules found the location from Nereus whom he seized until Nereus gave him the location of the apples of Hesperides.

Then Hercules found out thru Prometheus, whom Hercules had helped, that he would have to have Atlas retrieve the apples. Hercules agreed to hold the sky and the earth while Atlas retrieved the apples. When Atlas returned with the apples, he told Hercules that if he would hold the sky and earth for the rest of time, that he would take them to Eurystheus himself. But Hercules fooled Atlas by asking him to hold the earth until he padded his shoulders. Atlas took Hercules place holding the earth, and Hercules picked up the apples and ran.

After making the fantastic Hercules do all sorts of unbelievable errands, Eurystheus made sure that he did not succeed the last time. So, he ordered Hercules to abduct Cerberus, the underworld beast. Did you ever hear a living man visiting the Hades? But, Greek mythology tells us Hercules was no ordinary man. He was a hero.

He eventually did complete all the tasks, purified his soul and rescued the princess of Troy from a ravenous sea-monster. He also facilitated Zeus to beat the Giants in a fantastic battle for the control of Olympus. He married again, to the charming Deianira. She presented him a cloak, which was coated with what she mistakenly thought to be a magic like potion. She was told that the balm would make the person like her forever.

Ironically, it was poison, which burned Hercules skin. Hercules, not being able to endure the pain, questioned his friends to kindle a fire. Then Hercules placed himself on the fire to be burned up alive. But the gods looked down, and Zeus thought that Hercules had suffered enough. So he questioned Hera to end her rage toward Hercules, which she did. Then Hercules was brought to Olympus in Athena’s chariot by Zeus’ request.

This Greek mortal Hercules is undoubtedly the greatest hero of Greek Mythology. Hercules is still considered to be the perfect mythical character.

Although they seem to be things of the past, reminders of ancient Greek deities are all around us. When you read the following names, more than a few will look familiar.Ancient Greek Deities

The Greek Pantheon was a polytheistic system of thought and religion that assumed its Greek deities existed independently and individually. Their roll was to rule diverse aspects of the mortals every day life. Myth and culture is gathered in the Pantheon from where the deities leave toward their corresponding realm.

Due to the Hellenic polytheist beliefs in ancient times, deities formed relationships with each other on a more human scale. Compared to one-deity approaches in many modern religions, Greek deities had a surprising number of human limitations and weaknesses. Contrary to other religions, none of the ancient Greek deities was omniscient or omnipotent, although their power was beyond the mortals’ limit.

All Greek deities had the same origin as minor deities ruled by the Titans. They later overthrew the Titans in an epic battle. Some of the most renowned are:

Aether – God of the upper air

Aphrodite – Goddess of like and beauty

Apollo – God of the light, music, prophecy, poetry, and healing

Ares – God of war, primarily violent war and bloodshed

Artemis – Goddess of the moon and the hunt

Athena – Goddess of war, wisdom, strategy

Chaos – Non-gendered deity of the nothingness

Chronos – God of eternal time

Demeter – Goddess of agriculture

Erebus – God of darkness

Eros – God of like

Gaia – Titan Goddess of the Earth

Hades – God of the underworld, the death and the earth wealth, his realm receives his name.

Hemera – Goddess of daylight

Hephaestus – God of fire and the forge

Hera – Goddess of marriage and the family, sister and wife of Zeus

Hermes – God of commerce, travel, and thieves. Messenger of the gods

Hestia – Goddess of the hearth and domestic life that gave her place in the Mount Olympus to Dionysus

Nyx – Goddess of night

Pontus – Titan God of the sea

Poseidon – God of the sea

Tartarus – Titan God of the depths of the underworld

Uranus – Titan God of the heavens

Zeus – King of the Gods and God of thunder and lightning

As you can see, the long list of Greek deities is rather incredible when compared to one-deity religions such as Christianity and Islam. Regardless of the religious connotations, the names of these figures are often found in modern civilization although Roman translations are often used. For instance, Ares has been translated in Roman to Mars, the God of War and name of the 4th planet from our sun.

Greek deities represent a unique view of religion held by ancient Greeks. If the opportunity presents itself, you should read the Greek classics to gain an understanding of the rather emotional actions of the deities.

Aphrodite is the mythological Greek Goddess of like who legend has it was born out of the sea. According to Greek mythology Aphrodite was the Goddess of like beauty and sexual rapture (ooh ah!) born when Uranus the father of the gods was castrated by Cronus his son. Not a very family orientated bunch were they those Greek Gods? Anyway I digress, and it gets better. Cronus the dear loving son who chopped off his dads family jewels lobbed them into the sea where they foamed up into a veritable lather which produced Aphrodite and transported her to Cyprus. I reckon the name Aphrodite is really connected to the word foam or aphros and Chythera is a rough translation of Cyprus or Kypris.Well, It sure beats cheap charter flights and queing at airport check ins to get to the gorgeous Island of Cyprus for your holidays. Anyway, Zeus the top God was a trifle worried that the other Gods would fight over Aphrodites hand in marriage so he beat them to it by giving her to Hephaestus the God who fashioned the weapons as a black smith. Hephaestus was a steady hard working plodder whilst Aphrodite was a bit of a party animal and girl around town. Despite all this he loved her and using his skills as a black smith he knocked up (probably in his spare time) a gorgeous jeweled girdle with magic powers in gold filigree for her to wear. Terrible go Hephaesus, the girdle made her irresistible and she took many lovers not just amongst the Gods but mortals too. The most well-known being Adonis who gave her many sons including Eros from where the word erotic is taken (I leave you to work that one out).

The festival of Aphrodite was called Aphrodisiac (mm that’s where it came from) her priestesses represented her and to have sex with them was considered an act of worship (Myrtle! book me a flight I am taking a religious pilgrimage) or reverence towards this deity. Those Greeks sure new a thing or two about worshiping the Gods and the Gods themselves were not slow in the romance stakes either.

So now you know a bit about Aphrodite and her chums in Greek God land how about you visit where it’s all at. If you are plotting on taking a holiday inn Cyprus be sure to stop by and check out the rock of Aphrodite. Situated about 12 Kilometers outside of Paphos town close to the mountain/coast road you will find a fantastic small restuarant on the cliff edge overlooking the Mediterrainian ocean. There are some large rocks which are said to be the place where Athrodite was born. The legend claims that if you swim around these rocks during a full moon you will become 10 years younger (if you don’t kill yourself climbing down the cliffs first).

There are different versions of the Aphrodite tale and lots of local legends have grown out of it over the years but the official version is well narrated by the ancient Greek scholar Hesiod. Whatever version you choose to accept be sure to see the place for yourself, sort the history then chill out at the restaurant with a nice cool beer.

Hermes was unique among Greek Deities for a number of reasons. Primary among them was his tendency to be a god for everything at one point or another.The Greek Deity Known as Hermes
The twelve gods of Mount Olympus, in ancient Greece, played an vital role in the everyday lives of most Greeks. Whether they read the works of their well-known poets and playwrights, such as Homer, or dedicated offerings to their patron deity, gods and goddesses played a major part in Greek culture. One of the most vital of these deities, because of his ability to translate between gods and humans, was Hermes.

Hermes, along with being a god that was able to converse directly with humans, was also the patron god of many other aspects of Greek life. He was the god of travelers, cow herders and shepherds, athletics, literature, mechanics and invention. Along with these excellent qualities, Hermes was also seen as the governing deity of thieves and liars. In fact, the writer Homer was sure to count this as vital among his many attributes.

Another item that was connected with Hermes was fire. He was credited with the invention of fire (going along with his governance of invention), but this also made him a parallel of the Titan Prometheus. His other major inventions were the sport of boxing, the syrinx (pan pipes) and lyre. His association with the invention of boxing made Hermes an occasional patron of athletes. While he was certainly involved in many aspects of life, Hermes also had another job for those who entered the world of the dead.

Hermes served as a psychopomp, or escort from death into the afterlife, for the Greek pantheon. He was seen as the one who would bring souls down into the Underworld. In most Greek myths, he is the only deity besides Hades and Persephone that could cross between the world of the living and the Underworld. As time went on, the Olympic deities’ world evolved and so did Hermes. Once the pantheon was fully formed, Hermes was described as being the son of Zeus and Maia (who was the daughter of the Titan Atlas). He also gained a more detailed description, including a pouch, winged sandals and a winged cap.

Hermes was vital to many average Greeks throughout the Olympian era. His many different aspects (such as a messenger between gods and mortals, and as a psychopomp) as well as the diverse number of myths that were associated with him made Hermes an integral part of the Greek polytheistic society.

The many gods and goddesses of the ancient Greek culture played vital roles in every Greek’s life. From the family hearth, to the life-giving sun, to the water they bathed in, Greek gods were seen to govern all aspects of daily life. While some regions of the Greek realm were actual cults, which meant they worshiped one god or goddess above all others; others prayed to specific figures at different points in the year or for different strengths. If a mariner was about to go to sea, it is pretty certain that he would have prayed to Poseidon.

While Poseidon’s largest governance was the sea and ocean, he was also considered the god of horses, and the “Earth-Shaker”, creator of earthquakes. In Mycenaean culture, Poseidon was seen as the most powerful of all the gods, even above Zeus – he was the most frequently written about god in the entire pantheon. At this point, he was associated with “Two Queens”, Demeter and Persephone, although in later Hellenic Greece he was not at all related to these goddesses. He was also seen in this culture as the “Earth Father” with Demeter being the “Earth Mother”.

Poseidon was also a major patron god of several large cities within Greece. In Athens, he was second in line only to Athena, and in Corinth he was the main god of the city. Apollo was a close associate god, and while Poseidon’s realm was generally seen to be in the areas of the Earth and bodies of water, he also had another trait that was a bit more sinister. Poseidon was also blamed for causing mental disturbances, such as epilepsy. He shared this ability with both the god Dionysus, and the creatures known as the Maenads.

When sailors embarked on voyages, they prayed heavily to Poseidon. Occasionally, they would even sacrifice horses by drowning (as he was also known as the god of horses). It was said that when Poseidon was in his benevolent aspect, he made both cool seas and new islands. When the god was displeased or angered, but, he would cause earthquakes and shipwrecks by striking the ground with his trident. Poseidon was often pictured in a chariot being pulled by horses or sea horses, holding a trident, and associated with dolphins.

While Zeus was known as the originator god in later parts of Greek culture, Poseidon was the first “head god” of note. His later appearances as the duel god of water and earthquakes meant that he had the ability to affect many people at once, so he garnered many prayers, sacrifices and attention from all of Greece.

The many gods and goddesses found in ancient Greece formed a sort of society, with the twelve (eventually 14) major deities residing on Mount Olympus. From this mythical place, the Greek pantheon looked down on the mortals and other mythical creatures, had interactions with others, and even embarked on like affairs with non-gods. The lead god of those that lived on Mount Olympus was Zeus, the Greek god of sky and thunder, as well as the ruler of Mount Olympus and the highest ranking in the pantheon.

Zeus was the youngest son of the Titans Chronos and Rhea, older gods who were overthrown during the War of the Titans. Chronos had swallowed all of Zeus’s siblings, and upon winning his battle with his father, Zeus forced Chronos to disgorge the rest of his children. Some of these siblings became installed gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus, and he even married one of them, his elder sister Hera. His original wife, but, was Dione – but not much is known about this goddess-like figure. His union with Dione, according to the Iliad (by Homer) produced the Olympic goddess Aphrodite.

Zeusalso had many other children by various goddesses and consorts. With his wife Hera, he produced Ares, Hephaestus, Hebe and Eileithyia. His other offspring included Hermes (by Maia), Perseus (by Danae), Dionysus (by Semele), Apollo and Artemis (by Leto), the Muses (by Mnemosyne) and Heracles by Alcmene.

Zeus’s powers were not as varied as other gods and goddesses that were his contemporaries, but they were very strong. He had the ability to force the transformation of others, mortals and even mythical creatures, and he also was able to cast thunderbolts at those who had displeased him in any way. Being the “Sky God” made him also appear as the supreme god, and his counterpart in Roman culture, Jupiter, also held this office. Olympia was the site of the largest cult to Zeus, many people traveled there to worship all of the gods, but the games every four years were specifically dedicated to Zeus.

While Zeus was undoubtedly revered as the head of all religion in ancient Greece, many other gods and goddesses were seen as just as vital to specific areas. Zeus was mostly worshiped to appease his easily angered persona, with many sacrifices held to this fantastic god.

Anyways, Cyprus comes into the picture because Aphrodite was carried by the sea and came ashore on the Island and some legends claim she rode on a giant clam shell. In fact some Greek mythology refer to her as Cytherea or Kypros for this very reason. Zeus (the top God) was worried that the other Gods would fight over Aphrodite’s hand in marriage so he took the liberty of marring her of to Hephaestus the smith God. Boy was he knocked out? Scruffy ancient black smith weds Goddess of like, beauty and sexual rapture! Had his boat come in or what?

Hephaestus was over the moon and as a sign of his like for Aphrodite he used all his skills as a smith to fashion her a gorgeous bejeweled girdle with fine gold filigree. He even wove magic into the gold filigree which was a huge mistake on his part. The problem was that when ever Aphrodite wore the girdle she would become sexually irresistible bearing in mind that she was already the ultimate embodiment of female beauty anyway. Amongst her many lovers (she was a bit of a girl) were Gods but she also took mortal lovers too the most well-known being Adonis.

Some of her Sons are Eros, Anteros, Hymenaios and Aeneas through her union with her Trojan lover Anchisess. What can I say? It’s a typical tale of a gorgeous woman wreaking havoc amongst the male population, causing wars and several spoilt dinners to boot. Her festival was Aphrodisiac (now you know where that comes from) which was celerbrated in several places in Greece including Athens and Corinth. Her priestesses where not prostitutes but sexual intercourse with them was considered a form of worship to the Goddess herself.

When you visit Cyprus be sure to take a trip out to her alleged birth place a few kilometers outside of Paphos. The view from the cliffs is indeed spectacular and there is a resturant bar with a fantastic view point where you can relax with a cool drink. You will see the “rock of Aphrodite” itself just off the coast. The local legend states that if you swim around the rock at midnight during the full moon Aphrodite will make you ten years younger if the exercise doesn’t kill you off first that is. Delight in Cyprus and don’t forget to visit the rock of Aphrodite.
